Descriptions of Coursework Completed
Summer, 2010
ETEC 648c, Dr. Mike Menchaca
Introduction to Online Learning and Teaching
This course focuses on pedagogical and practical issue of online learning, theory and history of distance education, and basic web design.
Fall, 2010
ETEC 600, Dr. Catherine Fulford
Practice in Educational Technology
This course examines the profession of educational technology and the role of instructional designers. Theoretical and philosophical foundations underlying practice that include instructional systems theory, needs assessment, change theory, and relevant learning models. Practical applications of these theories to solve instructional problems in real-life settings.
Assignment examples: Front-end analysis and a final PowerPoint Presentation designed with Gavon Wong and Elvis Yang
ETEC 602, Dr. Curtis Ho
Teaching/Training Technologies
This course introduces innovative technologies that can be used in education, and the process to evaluate their use in education. Technologies introduced include movie editors such as Jaycut and iMovie, collaboration tools such as Google Apps, Wikispaces, Skype, and Wall, and graphic media sites such as Flickr, Picasa, Second Life. With partners Bruce and Gushiken and Christine Heirakuji, we evaluated the iPod for use in schools. Our cumulative project was a short movie made with Kansai students

Instructional Design and Development
This course prepares students to follow a systematic approach for designing instruction. Students are introduced to the application of basic concepts and techniques for solving real-life, instructional problems. With partners Macy Huynh-Ring and Eric Hermosura, we created, tested, and evaluated a paper-based module that teaches how to write a spiritual reflection. We tested the module in Eric’s religion class at St. Francis School.
ETEC 611, Dr. Grace Lin
Research in Educational Technology
In this courses, students learn the components and methods of academic and action research, including data collection and evaluation, literature review, ethical issues in research, and designing a research project. Group projects I was a member of included survey research methods and open educational resources. My final papers for this class were a literature review of OER, and an idea paper for action research in a teacher preparation course.
ETEC 643, Dr. Peter Leong
Educational Technology in Informal Learning Environments
The course explored the use of technology in informal learning environments such as in museums, cultural institutions, tourist attractions and visitor information centers. It also explored the use of video games in education. We focused on the selection and development of educational technology and media, the experience of the learner or visitor, and the learning environment. For this course I analyzed the Honolulu Art Academy with attention to principles discerned from the readings. With partners Lyn Ackerman and Billy Minke, we developed a game called “Health Hero”, which taught elementary age children about good health habits. We presented a brief paper about Health Hero at the AACE World Conference in Honolulu, 2011.

Planning for Technology and Resources
This online course prepares students to plan high quality online courses. It focuses on selecting and evaluating appropriate material, learning activities, assessment instruments. It also covers evaluation of online courses, accessibility, and universal design. In this class I developed a plan for an online Yearbook course.
ETEC 620, Instructor Malia Malichok
Visual Design
Course objectives for students are: demonstrate mastery of basic visual design techniques; be able to identify and articulate elements of good visual design in print, video and multimedia products; understand visual design theory and the application of visual design in instructional environments; and effectively use design to convey a message to a particular audience.
Topics includes photography, typography, layout for web and print, infographics and design analysis. A major assignment asked students to analyze an effective design, as well as a non-example. With partners Ro Hailsip. Bill Morrison, and Jenny Tanaka, we developed a website for a workshop on “Making Cheap and Easy Sushi.” See this website under "Illustrative Work--Multimedia Objects."

ETEC 750B, Dr. David M. Merrill
Instructional Design Seminar
Through a studio approach, students design a functional prototype—an interactive mockup of the final product with liberal annotation--and then revise it with feedback from the instructor and peers.
The prototype our team developed was “Creating the Narrative Photo”, designed with Eric Hermosura and Elvis Yang.
ETEC 632, Dr. Curtis Ho
Developing E-learning Environments
This course will focus on developing online instruction for educational and training settings including designing learning management solutions.
Planning, design, and development of e-learning instruction for educational and training settings. Implementation of online course elements such as student interaction, course management, testing, and content delivery using a learning management environments and open courseware. Construction of learning objects

Introduction to Digital Imaging
This course provides the essential methods and concepts of working with bitmap images and output to the fine art archival pigment print.
Summer, 2012
Journalism, Frederick Larson
Photojournalism
This course provided hands-on experience creating digital news stories.
Fall, 2012
ETEC 687, Ari Eichelberger
Instructional Development Practicum
This is the first semester of the ETEC masters capstone project course. Students apply the instructional design theories and skills learned in the program, and develop a technology-integrated unit or module prototype.
ETEC 622, Dr. Bert Kimura
E-Learning Theory and Design
Students in ETEC 622 learn principles of e-learning theory as well as design and development for instruction. This course also includes application to new media and web authoring. For the final project, I created a "MOOC"--a massive, open, online course--in poetry writing.
Spring, 2013
ETEC 690, Ari Eichelberger
ETEC Practicum
This is a continuation of ETEC 687, in which ETEC masters candidates complete their project materials, implement their project for data collection, analyze data, write project up for the TCC conference presentation, complete the electronic portfolio, and other related work.
ETEC 651, Dr. Mike Menchaca
Hypermedia Design
This course covers the utilization and application of advanced authoring tools, combining video, animation, graphics, and sound to develop student-centered learning. We created animated gifs, stop animations, and 3D animations in Blender, an open source animation application. For my final project I created a stop animation, "Mouse and Elephant", which can be seen under "Illustrative Work--Multimedia Objects."
